Can Dogs Eat Peanuts?

Dogs Can eat peanuts!

There are many different kinds of nuts, and many are not good for dogs. However peanuts are actually only masquerading as nuts. Peanuts, also known as groundnuts (Arachis hypogaea), are actually beans or seeds in the legume family.

Peanut allergies are not uncommon in humans, but they don’t seem to be a problem that affects dogs. Peanuts are actually a very common ingredient in dog treats, and peanut butter is a very common snack for dogs. Nothing can be known for sure though, so be certain to give your dog anything new, including peanuts, in limited quantities until you can be sure they have no allergies.

Though peanuts themselves are typically ok for dogs, many store bought peanuts contain sugar, salt, flavorings and excessive fats that can be bad for dogs. The best option for dogs is plain pealed peanuts.

Something else to consider is that dogs usually swallow things in big gulps; they do not finely chew things as we do as humans. This can lead to upset stomach and constipation if your dog eats too many peanuts at once.

While peanuts (and peanut butter) are full of protein, unfortunately they are also full of calories. So keep this in mind, especially if you have a senior dog or a dog that doesn’t get a lot of exercise.

Though peanut shells are not poisonous, they can cause upset stomach and constipation. Aside from dietary fiber, they are no real nutritional benefits, so be sure to shell the peanuts before giving them to your dog.
